Housing for the Arabic Intensive

Housing for the students of the Summer Arabic Intensive program will be provided by Zaytuna College as part of the program package. The Zaytuna Arabic Intensive housing is a cost-efficient convenience that is intended to reduce student stress load upon arrival, create a communal feeling among program students, and facilitate maximum acquisition of Arabic language skills. While students are not required to reside in the Arabic Intensive housing, Zaytuna College strongly encourages all students, including those living in the local Bay Area, to take advantage of the summer housing facilities arranged by the program. Students are also encouraged to visit the College Life section of this website to learn more about living and studying in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Summer 2010 housing will be located at Westminster House (2315 College Avenue in Berkeley, California), literally steps away from the UC–Berkeley campus. Students live in deluxe single-gender suites with one, two, or three roommates. Each suite comes furnished with the following amenities: one bed and desk per person, private bathroom with shower, carpeted floors, high-speed wireless access, portable refrigerator, and microwave. Common areas are also comfortably furnished, and include an elegant library, quiet study room, laundry facility, open-air courtyard, and an expansive roof deck with beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay and Berkeley hills.

Type of Rooms back to top

  • Option A: Quad Room (for 4 occupants: 4 beds, 4 desks, 1 private bathroom)
  • Option B: Triple Room (for 3 occupants: 3 beds, 3 desks, 1 private bathroom)
  • Option C: Double Room (for 2 occupants: 2 beds, 2 desks, 1 private bathroom)

Roommate Policy back to top

If you would like to share a room with friends or family members who will also be studying in the Summer Arabic Intensive, you may request up to three roommates on the Application for Admission. However, please note that space is limited and applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, roommate preferences cannot be guaranteed.

Arrival & Orientation Session

Housing for the Summer Arabic Intensive officially opens on Friday, June 18, 2010. The mandatory Orientation Session is scheduled for Sunday, June 20. It is crucial that students be present for orientation, so we require that students arrive no later than Saturday, June 19, in order to settle into their accommodations and prepare for the Sunday orientation and the first day of classes on Monday morning, June 21. Orientation includes a formal welcome, an introduction to the program and accommodations, a discussion of student policies, and information about student life in Berkeley.

Policy on Late Arrivals / Early Departures

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive program requires 100 percent attendance from the first to the last day of classes. Though we recognize that emergency circumstances may arise, promptness and timeliness are strongly encouraged, due to the intensive nature of the program.

Similarly, the Zaytuna Arabic Intensive faculty and staff understand that schedules at students' home universities or places of employment may require early departure. In such circumstances, please note this on your application in order to allow us to make advance preparations. Please note, however, that priority may be given to students who are able to stay for the entire term.
