Is the Arabic Intensive for Me?

Students of the Zaytuna College Summer Arabic Intensive come to Berkeley for a variety of reasons. Many are undergraduate and graduate students intending to fulfill a language requirement while taking advantage of the unique educational experience Zaytuna has designed, while others are professionals or retirees hoping to jumpstart their journey of learning Arabic in order to access devotional texts or for employment-related reasons. What all of our students have in common is the motivation and ability to work and thrive in a rigorous, two-month residential program.

• Step 1: Submit your completed application, along with the $50 non-refundable application fee, to Zaytuna College. Our online application can be accessed here.
• Step 2: After we have received your completed application and application fee, you will receive an email from Zaytuna College confirming that your application is under consideration. The academic committee for the Summer Arabic Intensive will review your application and inform you of your status (acceptance, denial, or placement on the waiting-list) within three weeks via email.
• Step 3: Upon receiving notice of acceptance, applicants must make their first payment (see payment schedule below) as early as possible in order to secure their seat in the program (payable by check, money order, or cashier’s check to Zaytuna College; please see our payment schedule and refund policy below). Please note that students are admitted into the program on a rolling basis, and a student's entry into the program is only confirmed upon Zaytuna College's receipt of the first payment. 
• Step 4: The remaining program fee balance must be received by June 1, 2012 (please refer to the payment schedule below).

Zaytuna College strives to establish affordable and fair student fees that reflect the quality of programs offered and adequately cover administration expenses. Please note that for 2011, tuition and housing fees for the Summer Arabic Intensive are combined and reflect a total package cost, which includes tuition for core Arabic courses, textbooks, and housing for the duration of the program.

Program fees vary according to type of room (single, double, or triple). Students are asked to rank their preferences on the Application for Admission, and program fees will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please select from the housing options below.

Zaytuna College cannot guarantee preferred choices, but will do its best to accommodate everyone according to their preferences.

• Option A: Single Room (1 occupant)
  Total Program Cost: $5,530 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option B: Double Room (2 occupants)
  Total Program Cost: $5,255 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option C: Triple Room (3 occupants)
  Total Program Cost: $5,035 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option D: Tuition Only (Housing not included)
  Total Program Cost: $3000 (includes tuition and textbooks)

There will be need-based financial assistance available to students who could otherwise not attend the program. Please file a formal Financial Assistance Form online if you would like to apply for need-based financial aid. The form may be accessed here.

Upon acceptance into the program, students must make their first payment to Zaytuna College by March 1 (or within 3 weeks of the admisisons notice if accepted after March 1) in order to reserve their place in the program (the amount of the payment will vary according to package; please refer to the payment schedule below). The Zaytuna Arabic Intensive is one of the nation's most popular summer language programs, and accepted students are encouraged to reserve their places promptly.

The remaining fee balance must be paid by June 1, 2012, but can be made according to the installments below. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with Zaytuna's strict refund policy.

In order to efficiently and fairly process refunds for students who withdraw from the Summer Arabic Intensive, Zaytuna College has designed a refund policy that separates tuition from housing costs, which are consolidated during payment. Tuition is a flat cost of $3,000 for every applicant and equals the first $1,000 of each of the three payments in the payment schedule listed above. The housing cost for each applicant varies based upon housing choices and equals the remainder of each of the three installments once tuition is subtracted.

The percentages in the chart below indicate how much, respectively, of their tuition and housing payment applicants would receive back if they were to withdraw from the program on -- or before -- the date listed above.

Please note that the refund timeline applies regardless of the date applicants make their payments toward the program.
