Is the Arabic Intensive for Me?

Students of the Zaytuna College Summer Arabic Intensive come to Berkeley for a variety of reasons. Many are undergraduate and graduate students intending to fulfill a language requirement while taking advantage of the unique educational experience Zaytuna has designed, while others are professionals or retirees hoping to jumpstart their journey of learning Arabic in order to access devotional texts or for employment-related reasons. What all of our students have in common is the motivation and ability to work and thrive in a rigorous, two-month residential program.

• Step 1: Submit your completed application, along with the $50 refundable application fee, to Zaytuna College. Our online application can be accessed here.
• Step 2: After we have received your completed application and application fee, you will receive an email from Zaytuna College confirming that your application is under consideration. The academic committee for the Summer Arabic Intensive will review your application and inform you of your status (acceptance, denial, or placement on the waiting-list) within three weeks via email.
• Step 3: Upon receiving notice of acceptance, applicants have three weeks to make the first payment of $2000 to secure their seat in the program (payable by credit card, check, money order, or cashier’s check to Zaytuna College; please see our payment options below).
• Step 4: To save your place in the program, the remaining program fee balance must be received by June 1, 2010.

Zaytuna College strives to establish affordable and fair student fees that reflect the quality of programs offered and adequately cover administration expenses. Please note that for 2010, tuition and housing fees for the Summer Arabic Intensive are combined and reflect a total package cost, which includes tuition for core Arabic courses, textbooks, and housing for the duration of the program.

Program fees vary according to type of room (quad, triple, or double). Students are asked to rank their preferences on the Application for Admission, and program fees will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. Below are the four available options for program fees.

• Option A: Quad Room (4 occupants)
  Total Program Cost: $4750 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option B: Triple Room (3 occupants)
  Total Program Cost: $4850 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option C: Double Room (2 occupants)
  Total Program Cost: $5050 (includes tuition, textbooks, and housing for duration of program)
• Option D: Tuition Only (Housing not included)
  Total Program Cost: $3000 (includes tuition and textbooks)

Upon acceptance into the program, students have three weeks to pay the security deposit of $2000 to Zaytuna College. The remaining fee balance must be paid by June 1, 2010.

Students can pay tuition and fees to the Zaytuna Arabic Intensive by mailing checks or money orders to Zaytuna College or by using the online payment system, described below, at the appropriate time. Students who qualify for financial assistance must make their payments through checks or money orders and cannot use the online system.

• Security Deposit: Upon receiving your notice of acceptance, make your secure online payment of $2000 within 3 weeks to secure your seat in the program.

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive program draws strength from the commitment, consistency, and dedication of its students. In order to prevent last-minute cancellations, to maximize space for as many applicants as possible, and to adequately cover administrative expenses, the program has adopted the following strict refund policy:

PLEASE NOTE: After June 1, 2010, cancellations are subject to a $1500 fee. Only in a verifiable emergency will refunds be issued. NO REFUNDS ARE TO BE ISSUED AFTER JULY 1, 2010.
