This course is an introduction to two of the five pillars of the Islamic faith: obligatory almsgiving and the pilgrimage (zakat & Hajj). The study of these pillars covers the rules governing the proper execution and payment of zakat as well as the rules for the proper performance of the Hajj. Students will have a choice of enrolling in legal (fiqh) courses that are based upon one of the following three Sunni schools of jurisprudence: Hanafi, Maliki, or Shafi’i; however, comparative studies will be incorporated in certain areas of the course.
