Building Our Collective Future
It is no coincidence that when Muslims had wealth combined with knowledge, we had great centers of learning such as al-Azhar University in Egypt and Dar al-Hikmah in Iraq. And it is no coincidence now that America, as the richest society on earth, has the most prestigious and influential academic institutions, and they are endowed institutions just as those Muslim institutions once were. It is no coincidence. Money has always underwritten intellectual power.
As our community in America grows in the twenty-first century, who is going to educate them? Who is going to provide spiritual guidance for them? Who is going to provide thought leadership for them? Who is going to provide institutions that normalize Islam in this society so that they can be perfectly comfortable with their American identity along with their Islamic identity? Those things do not come about accidentally. We have to begin building and planning and organizing and strategizing to make those sorts of institutions, to make that sort of community development a reality, and if we do not do it, then someone is going to do it for us—but they might not have the same ideas in mind that we have. So let us start now to build our collective future.
~ Imam Zaid Shakir, in a 2007 speech
